Manganese also improves hardenability, allowing for better heat treatment responses in higher-strength grades. It counteracts sulfur's harmful effects: sulfur forms brittle iron sulfides, but manganese reacts to form manganese sulfides, which are less brittle and evenly distributed, reducing hot shortness during rolling. Higher manganese levels (1.0-1.65%) in high-strength channel steel boost tensile strength by 10-15% without significant ductility loss, making them suitable for heavy-load applications.
